In English - Mary Higgins Clark - A cry in the night

I would like to share with you a typical holiday book. OK, I know the holidays are over... but let's make them last a little with this article about a mystery novel.

Title: A cry in the night
Author: Mary Higgins Clark
Genre: mystery novel
Year: 1982
Country: USA
Summary
Jenny Mc Partland is a divorced mother of two little girls. Her struggle with poverty brutally comes to an end as she falls in love with Erich Krueger, a rich painter who is passionately in love with her too, marries her and adopts the children. Jenny follows him and stays in his gigantic farm in Minnesota. But Erich becomes extremely possessive, doesn't allow her to go outside the property, and Jenny feels suffocated in this strange atmosphere, haunted by Erich's dead beloved mother. Moreover, Jenny's ex-husband is prowling around the place. The fairy tale will turn into nightmare as Jenny becomes more and more paranoid.
My opinion
First, the atmosphere of the novel is fascinating. This strange house, full of the memory of a dead person, is really sinister and creepy. The really fast passage from hapiness to fear is remarkable. The characters are excellent too: the happy Jenny, who turns out to be so nervous, and the dark Erich and his morbid fascination for his dead mother.
What's also crucial in a mystery novel, the suspense is extremely big. Itis litterally impossible to put the book down. The mystery remains until the very end of the novel, which is, of course, stunning.
I really like in this novel this psychological aspect about paranoia, amnesia, and other psychological pathologies presented in the book. It is always extremely interesting.
I really loved this novel and would warmly recommand it to anyone who likes chills ! But don't read it alone in the house at night as I did...

To conclude
   5/5, frightening
I would like to tell you that as I am now in Terminale S, I will have to work A LOT, so I don't know if I will be able to read as many books as I used to, and regularly post articles on this website. I fear I won't post every week anymore, but rather once in two weeks. Anyway, I will try my best to post every week, but I can't be sure of anything. I hope you won't hold that against me and continue to follow the blog. Thank you all for your support and thanks to everyone who clicked on any of my articles :)

In English - John Green - Paper Towns

After reading more and more articles about John Green in this blog I like, I decided to finally read another of his novels, Paper Towns, soon on screen.

Title: Paper Towns
Author: John Green
Genre: YA novel
Year: 2008
Country: USA

Summary
Quentin Jacobsen, a teenager, used to be a very close friend of his neighbour Margo Roth Spiegelman. He is still in love with her and admires her amazing and special personnality. But they barely talk to each other anymore. One night though, Margo comes into Quentin's room through the window and takes him with her on a punitive expedition to take revenge on some of her friends who betrayed her. Quentin feels proud and happy to be the one she chosed. But the next day, Margo disappears, only leaving some clues for him to discover her retreat. With the help of his best friends Ben and Radar, and Margo's former best friend Lacey, Quentin will go on a search for Margo.

My opinion
First of all, Paper Towns is a page-turner. I couldn't help going on reading it. Quentin's attempts to solve the puzzle Margo left him made the book fascinating; I felt like I was reading a crime novel and really liked that. I also liked the passages in the abandonned shop, because I am currently fascinated by Urbex (urban exploration); I think I am sensitive to the mysterious charm of abandonned places, and I found this charm was felt in the novel.
But I have to confess one thing: I couldn't become attached to the characters. It was the same as in The Fault in our stars. I guess I felt this way because I find John Green's eccentric teenagers quite artificial. I could have loved this book, but I thought it had something unfinished, in a way.
Last but not least, the novel made me laugh a lot. Quite a guilty laugh, though, the humour being rather vulgar. The writing has, to my mind, nothing extraordinary.
I have to mention the very end of the novel, that I loved and found remarquable.
So my opinion on this book is mitigated... I liked it better than  The Fault in our stars though.

To conclude
4/5, artificial but quite fascinating

I will probably go and watch the movie as soon as it will be released in France and may write my thoughts about it on my blog or on the Facebook page.

In English - Oscar Wilde - The Picture of Dorian Gray

I am currently revising my baccalauréat, that I take on June 19th. But writing articles about litterature could be regarded as revising, don't you think ?

Title: The Picture of Dorian Gray
Author: Oscar Wilde
Genre: fantastic novel
Publication date: 1890
Country: United Kingdom

Summary
In the Victorian London, Dorian Gray is an extremely handsome and wealthy young man. He has a painter, named Basil Hallward, as a friend. Basil paints Dorian's portrait, a magnificient painting, in which he put all of his talent and love for Dorian. Lord Henry Wotton, one of Basil's friends, makes Dorian's acquaitance and wants to admire his portrait. Seeing the picture of the beautiful and young Dorian, he can't help tell him its beauty won't last long. Piqued, Dorian makes the wish for his picture to age instead of him. Dorian gets more and more fascinated by Lord Henry's personnality, his cynic sense of humour, his scepticism and his hedonism, so that he merely sees Basil anymore. Dorian soon falls in love with a lovely actress, an innocent young girl he admires for her beauty. But the love affair will end tragically and Dorian will throw himself into the seediest parts of London still looking young and innocent, while the evil portrait shows the signs of his age and abuses.

My opinion
The thing that stroke me the most about this book was its being an aesthete's novel. The descriptions are polished, and the fascinating originality of Lord Henry's character and his propensity to throw disillusioned maxims at any time are perfect illustrations of the Portrait's aesthetics. I loved this aspect of the novel very much, I don't usually read much of this kind of novels so I was pleased to discover one.
But the novel is also philosophical: this book raises several issues such as time passing, self-representation and the moral principle according which you don't get away with the consequences of what you do, and it is very interesting to see how this theme is being renewed (for example, I am thinking of La Peau de Chagrin by Balzac). The Victorian London reminded me of Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Stevenson and Conan Doyle's novels too.
Nevertheless, I didn't enjoy the novel that much. To my mind, the amount of maxims about everything make the novel quite difficult to read and pauses the plot a bit too much. The thing is, there are so many flashes of wit one after the other that it is quite hard to focus on each one and that, to my mind, they are not as powerful as they could have been.

To conclude
   3,5/5, a aesthate's novel

In English - Agatha Christie- Murder on the Orient-Express

I owe an apology to the English-speaking people who still follow me (if there are still English-speaking people who follow this blog...). It has been a while since I haven't posted anything in English. So I am back with a classic by Agatha Christie.

Title: Murder on the Orient-Express
Author: Agatha Christie
Genre: Crime novel
Year: 1934
Country: United Kingdom

Summary
The great Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, staying in Instanbul, has to go back to London quickly. He therefore takes the famous and luxurious Orient-Express with his friend M.Bouc, who works at the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits. One night, the train gets held up in the snow, and this night, an American, Mr. Ratchett, is stabbed. The murderer has to be one of the passengers. Poirot wants to solve the case. He soon finds some clues and hears of a young lady with a red silk dressing-gown. Some contradictions appear that make the case more and more complicated and Poirot has to use the power of his little grey cells...

My opinion
I have read a lot of Agatha Christie's novels, and since this one is one of her most famous crime novels, I thought it was time for me to read it.
I found what I like in crime novels in general: a tricky mystery, and a surprising solution. Of course the solution seems obvious when Poirot explains everything, and I guess this is why Agatha Christie truly deserves her nickname "the Queen of Crime". This is why this book is fascinating; you can't put it down.
But what I like the most in Agatha Christie's novel is the humour and the self-mockery towards the English. She is exceptionally talented for sketching characters in a very funny way. Or at least, you will find it funny and amusing if you like British humour.
This is why I can say I liked this novel, but it won't supplant in my heart the genuine Destination unknown and Endless Night.

To conclude
4/5, a admirable crime novel filled with humour

By the way, I created a Facebook page for the blog, so make sure to like it !!!
There is a strong probability that the next article is about Thérèse Raquin by Zola.
Once again, please forgive the mistakes I have surely made, and feel free to correct me in the comments down below.

In English - John Green - The Fault in our stars

Finally I decided to read this bestseller...

Title: The Fault in our stars
Author: John Green
Genre: YA novel - love novel
Year: 2012
Country: USA

Summary

Hazel Grace Lancaster, 16 years old, suffers from a thyroid cancer that became a lung cancer, unabling her to breathe properly without an oxygen tank. Thank to a miraculous medicine, Phallanxifor, her life expectancy turned longer. She is forced by her mother to attend a pathetic and depressing Support Group. One day, she meets there a gorgeous and original boy, Augustus Walters. They get on well and quickly become friends. Hazel tells him about her favorite book, An Imperial Affliction, that has the particularity to end right in the middle of a sentence. Her dream is to meet the author to know what happens to the characters. Augustus will do everything to show her his love and make her dream come true.

My opinion
First things first, the plot. Of course, the subject of the book is not the most joyful ever, and the book in itself can't help being pathetic, rather sad, and, according to me, very cheesy. The love story is a little too easy between them. Hazel and Augustus are of course quite special people, Hazel being obsessed with An Imperial Affliction and Augustus loving all sorts of metaphores. So, of course, they are not banal and that is a good point. But let's be honest: I didn't manage to truly love the characters, especially Hazel, who is the narrator. Maybe I didn't because I found Hazel quite a depressing character, and Augustus a little pale. I mean that I wasn't that interested in what they were going through.
Then, as far as the reflection about sickness and death is concerned, I found this novel was of varying quality. It could have been very interesting, and sometimes it is, especially at the end where one of the characters is confronted to the weakness and degeneracy of the sick other one, but most of the time, Hazel keeps saying "Dying sucks, dying sucks", which is obviously accurate but not one of the most profound observation ever.
I can't talk about this book without mensioning the humor. Well, it's not really my kind of humor and a bit repetitive, but I have to admit it made me smile most of the time. The writing is like the reflection, of varying quality. As far as the narration is concerned, I found out why I didn't like that much those YA-books-that-are-told-by-a-teen-girl-who-falls-in-love that are such bestsellers nowadays (I am thinking of Twilight, The Hunger Games, or Divergent): I simply prefer the 3rd person narration than the first person narration. I think it makes the book more interseting by giving the narration some objectivity and allows a better sentimental or social analasis. I am thinking, for example of Zola's novels which are my favorite ever. But of course it is a very personal point of view.
It is hard for me to give my opinion about this novel, because though I spotted many weaknesses and didn't fall in love with it, I still couldn't put it down and liked it. This is a paradox...

To conclude
   3/5, of varying quality

I started watching the movie, I have not finished it yet but I can say I find the acting quite bad, except for Shailene Woodley who plays Hazel and is amazing. And I was surprised because the plot of the movie is the same as the one of the book, I even recognized some quotes from the book. So I guess it is a very good point.

In English - Veronica Roth - Divergent

So I am back from holidays... That is why from now on I will post an article once a week during the week-end. Here is an article about the last book I read during the holidays, and since the original language is English, I am writing the article in English. I hope my English is correct...

Title: Divergent
Author: Veronica Roth
Genre: Young Adult book - Dystopia - Adventure
Year: 2011
Country: USA

Plot
Beatrice Prior lives in Chicago in a dystopian world where society is divided into five factions. Erudite are the researchers, the scientists, the doctors, they ard the most intelligent people. Amity are the farmers, they are the most peaceful. Dauntless, the brave, are the police; Abnegation, the selfless, take care of the poor and rule the city, while Candor, the honest, are the judges. Each faction has its leaders, values, neighborhoods and citizens who stay in their faction during their whole life. Some people aren't in any faction, they are factionless, poor and rejected. Every year, all sixteen-year-old boys and girls must have a test which determines their their faction, based on their personality. Tris is an Abnegation leader's daughter. She is sixteen and when she has the test, she is told to be Divergent, that is to say she is all the factions at the same time, and that the police hounds Divergents. She must be careful. She chooses to be Dauntless because their passionate and free life has always appealed to her. But before she can become a Dauntless, she has to pass some other tests, learn how to fight, and live during monthes in a very hard competition atmosphere, while Erudite are stiring up a plot against Abnegation to rule the town. Will she be able to become an Dauntless without anybody discovers she is a Divergent ? Will she manage to thwart Erudite's plot ? Read the book and you will know !

My opinion
First of all, I find the plot quite good, even though I personnally think that dividing society into personnality-based factions is a bad idea: nobody on earth can fit into a predefined personnality. Each person is unique and this is what makes this world's richnesss. And I didn't understood why leaders hounded Divergents: they are so powerful, why don't they use them ? To my mind, the dystopia is not really logic. And something bothered me: at a certain point in the storyline, she comes into a building. She is said to wear a skirt. But when she comes out, she is wearing jeans ? Maybe I seem pernickety, but I still don't understand.
Nevertheless, the story is compelling and the characters are quite endearing. I really couldn't stop reading ! There is not too much action, there is also a bit of psychology in this novel. The romance between Beatrice and Four, her trainer, is clumsily, but still touchingly told.
There comes the most important point, to my mind: the style. And the style is not good. This book is not what I call litterature. Litterature involves a certain kind of suggestion power, stylistic devices, beautiful sentences. I personnally think that Beauty, and I wrote it with a capital letter, is the most important. I read because I am particularly sensitive to the beauty of writing. And the writing is not beautiful in this book. This is why, if, by reading you are searching shudder, if you like captivating adventure novels, read it. It is a good adventure novel. But if, like me, writing is what matters to you, avoid this book. It would be a waste of time. After all, each reader has his favorite kind of books. Thank goodness !

To conclude
   3,5/5, rather good

Don't hold it against me if I criticized the number one bestseller... I tried to give honestly my opinion about this novel. I also read Insurgent and saw the Divergent movie. I will try to write an article about both because there is a lot to say.
Anyway, I miss litterature's immortal classics, now that I am not on holiday anymore,  this is why I have planned to read Sentimental Education by Flaubert.
Please don't forget to leave a comment down below, let me know if you agree or not.

In English - R.J. Palaccio - Wonder

Here is a new article about a book I borrowed almost at random...

Title: Wonder
Author: R.J. Palaccio
Genre: Novel
Country: USA

Summary
August is quite a special child. He has a genetically-transmitted disease that makes his face look deformed. He thinks that he is ugly, and every other child who sees him runs away, screaming. Even grown-ups are surprised. This is why he never went to school. But one day, his parents dcide to let him go to middle-school, because he cannot live all alone anymore. So he goes to Beecher Prep School. Unfortunately it is very hard for him. Nobody wants to sit next to him, or talk with him, or even touch him, except a boy whose name is Jack Will, and Summer, a really nice girl. He has to face bullying.

My opinion
By reading the summary of the book, you could think it is really sad and depressing. But it is not at all like this. It let you go into the world of childhood, that can be really cruel, but has a kind of freshness. The thing is, most of the kids are mean, but they do not really mean it,and cannot help it, they are,in a certain way, innocent. There is a duality in these children.
Second, the story is told by several children, such as August, his sister Via, his friends Jack and Summer... It is very interesting to have children's point of view, they regard things and social relationships in such a different way from grown-ups ! I really found August was so cute, and I enjoyed a lot these children's stories. Moreover the book is not sad nor sanctimonious; and the end is charming.
The chapters are short so the book is easy to read. And I did not have trouble understanding, the English is easy to understand. Nevertheless, the only thing that bothered me is that one chapter iswritten without any capital letter. I wonder why (excuse me, that was a really bad pun...).
I adored this book so much that I have already ordered it on Amazon.

To conclude
   5/5, amazing

I hope I have not made too many mistakes... I am currently reading The Magic Skin by Balzac (La Peau de Chagrin).

In English - Rick Riordan - The Kane Chronicles 2

I am back with a new book by Rick Riordan, the second one of the Kane Chronicles, The Throne of Fire . I know, I should have written an article about the first one, but I read it about six months ago and I have just finished the second one, so... Please forgive my English mistakes...

Title: The Throne of Fire
Author: Rick Riordan
Genre: Fantasy
Year: 2011
Country: United States

Summary
They defeated Seth in The Red Pyramid, Carter and Sadie Kane, 13-years old- teenagers, the pharaohs' descendants and powerful wizzards, teach young beginners magic in Brooklyn. But their second task is hard: they have to face a dangerous ennemy: Apophis, the big snake and the Chaos Master, is awaking. That is why Carter and Sadie want to wake Ra up. Ra is the god of the Sun and used to fight Apophis every day. In order to find him, Carter and Sadie, helped by the dworf god Bes, have to search for the Book of Ra and fight against the wizzards from the House of Life, represented by the dangerous Vlad Menchikov. They have only five days left to save the world, though the gods themselves are against them.

My opinion
I did not find The Red Pyramid, the first book, was a good novel. According to me, it looked like Percy Jackson too much, and was not at all as good as it. But I enjoyed The Throne of Fire much better. First, the characters are more complex and the book is thrilling. Then, I learned more about Egyptian mythology, which is quite fascinating and not as well-known as the Greek mythology. And overall, to my mind, The Throne of Fire is funnier than The Red Pyramid or Percy Jackson. I really laughed while reading this book. And the main character are human and you can really well identify with them.
According to me, the book is still not well-written, and not as awesome as the Percy Jackson series, but I was surprised by this book. I really thought it would be worse than The Red Pyramid.

To conclude
   3/5, a good surprise

In English - Mrs Doubtfire

I am back to write you a new film review. I watched this movie during the last holidays and I would like to share with you my thoughts about it.

Title:  Mrs. Doubtfire
Director: Chris Columbus
Starring: Robin Williams, Sally Field, Pierce Brosnan
Year: 1993
Country: USA
Genre: Comedy

Summary
When his wife demands divorce and gets the right to keep with her their three children, Daniel Hillard (Robin Williams), an excentric actor, can't bear it. He is only allowed to visit them on Saturdays, but he does need to see Lydia, Christopher and Nattie every day. He has to find a job and a place to live to have his children one week out two. He manages to find a job in a TV channel as... a cleaning man, and with the help of his brother, he dresses himself as an elderly English governess, Euphegenia Doubtfire. He then tries to be hired by his wife to take care of the children and be able to see them everyday. He succeeds, which induces many crazy situations when his wife starts dating someone else...

My opinion
I did not really enjoy this movie for many reasons. However, watching Robin Williams dressed as the perfect English governess and acting like he was, is quite funny.
But there is nothing original in the movie. For example, the children are so cliche ! I came out from the movie with a hard feeling of  "déjà vu". I was expecting the supposed-to-be-funny sentences before they were pronounced. And the whole film is a repetition of the same jokes. I mean, there is nothing new. The plot is predictible and the end is much too "perfect". Moreover, sometimes the main character is coarse. The actors do not act very well. On the whole, this is a really bad comedy. To conclude, let me advise you not to watch Mrs. Doubtfire if you do not want to waste your time.

To conclude
   1/5, just bad

I tried to give you my opinion about this movie. If you do not agree with me, please let me know why in the comments down below. Thank you for reading !

PS: The director, Chris Columbus, shot the first Percy Jackson movie, and I am a huge fan of the books. The film is not very good, but I was still hoping something better for Mrs Doubtfire, so I was quite disappointed.

In English- Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief

Here I am ! I just started writing articles in English. The first one will be about a fantasy novel by Rick Riordan: Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. In fact, I have read the whole serie and I enjoyed it very much. I dedicate this to my friends from Google +. Please would you forgive me, I do not speak English very well yet, so if you spot a mistake, please let me know it. The first book is The Lightning Thief.

Summary
Greek gods are actually real. That is what a teenager, Percy Jackson, whose mother is married to an unbearable loser, finds out. His best friends Grover is a satyre and his Latin teacher is the famous centaur Chiron. They tell him that himself is a demigod, half human, half god. He must go to a special camp where such people are safe from the attacks of monsters. But somebody happens to have stolen Zeus'most powerful weapon, his lightning bolt, and the king of gods suspects Percy. He must find the Lightning Thief before the Summer Solstice to prove he is wrong. His friends Grover and Annabeth, daughter of Athena, goddess of wisdom, will help him.

My opinion
I really enjoyed this book, maybe because I like Greek mythology very much. I find the idea of mythology in today's world just awesome. The characters are friendly, and the Wicked are quite complex.
Nevertheless, I did not like some characteristics of the book. First, I think Rick Riordan does not write very well. I know this is a book written for teenagers, but to my mind this is not a reason to write like a teenager. Second, the book is about Greek mythology, so I expected more Greek stuff... In the book America is the centre of the world and the whole story takes place in the US. For example, Olympus is above the Empire State Building. I know the USA are the main and the most powerful country in the world, I find it good that American people are proud of their country, I like this country and its language, but I believe that maybe the book is "too American". Third, it was written on the cover the book was "hilarious"...well, I did not find it very funny.
Despite these reserves, The Lightning Thief seemed to me very thrilling and on the whole, I really enjoyed it a lot.

To conclude
4,5/5 read it as a relaxation, but still awesome.

The movie (2010, directed by Chris Columbus, starring Logan Lerman, Alexandra Daddario and Brandon T. Jackson) does not follow the book at all, and it is average. It is better to watch it before reading the book, not to be disappointed by the film. It is not as awful as the fangirls say, to my mind, but yet, not a masterpiece.
